The choice of the neighbouring metropolis to the north seems logical: Munich is growing more rapidly than any other German city. Even though a new beer house pays its respects to tradition in the city centre, elsewhere Munich is showing a new face. Housing and urban planning are the themes. But Munich seems to have a problem with density: one encounters greenery on housing estates and an open development system rather than the further development of the city’s main body. However, as far as directing urban development is concerned Munich finds itself in a favourable position. Through regulations for “socially just land use” for quite some time now the city has been imposing a charge for added value, of which many in Switzerland can still only dream.
